What is rickets?

Rickets is known as the softening of the bones in infants and children, which makes them more vulnerable to fractures and deformities of the bones. The children who do not get an adequate amount of vitamin D, are at an increased risk of suffering from rickets. It is needed the proper absorption of calcium that helps in the formation of bones and their maintenance. Excessive diarrhea and vomiting also lead to a deficiency of calcium thus rendering the children with severe malnutrition which makes them more prone to develop rickets. The cause of rickets goes beyond deficiency, otherwise how a healthy child suddenly suffers from rickets?

We in our clinic had a 1year 6months old child who came with chief complaint of wheezing in chest for the last 4 months. He got recurrent cough and colds every 1-2 weeks. He also complained of pain in legs. On going into depth of this child’s history we found that the child was completely healthy when born. But immediately after birth the child was vaccinated, which caused an immune impairment and the child complained of poor weight gain. The vaccines were still continued, and the child started suffering from gastric and respiratory complaints. When the child came to us, he complained of dislocation of elbows. This means that, even his musculoskeletal system was affected.
